As the season comes to and end, it makes sense to showcase this mountain road. Zoji La (11,500ft) may not be the highest pass on the road to Ladakh but the road over it is stunning. You start the climb up the pass from the Sonamarg Valley (9,000ft). As you start climbing, the greenery of the Kashmir Valley disappears. Instead, you see the starkness of the snow clad mountains. Closer to the top of the pass, the cobblestones turn to tarmac. From here on, the road is pretty much in great nick all the way to Kargil.
The road as such is a work in progress. There are some good bits and some bits still being worked upon. The state of the road really depends on how bad the winter is and how much work is done to clear the passes. Zoji La is usually one of the first passes to open and one of the last to close so it is worked on continuously.
