Triumph Motorcycles to expand its footprint in India

Triumph Motorcycles is planning to launch nine more dealerships in the country by June next year, taking the number to 25 from the current 16 outlets it has. Six new models will also be launched by the time which includes updates to existing bikes and new products. The Triumph Scrambler 1200 will make its international debut on October 24 and will be launched in India in January 2019. Triumph is eyeing tier II cities too for its onslaught on the Indian market.

According to Triumph Motorcycles (India) general manager Shoeb Farooq, the premium motorcycle segment (500cc and above) has seen a growth of 20 per cent in the last five years and Triumph has seen a growth of 47 per cent in this period. With the industry expected to grow at 10-15 per cent in the next five years, he is optimistic on the growth of the premium motorcycle segment they are targeting sales of 2,000 motorcycles per year in the next four to five years. He also said that the company is focusing on premium motorcycle segment for now.

Sixty per cent of Triumph Motorcycles’ sales is achieved from the top 20 cities in India. In August 2017, Triumph and Bajaj had announced their tie-up for design, development and distribution of mid-range motorcycles that are expected to roll out in another three years.

Recently, Harley-Davidson also announced its grand plans for the Indian market to build bikes in the 250cc-500cc segment apart from introducing adventure tourers and naked streetfighters. It will be interesting to see Harley-Davidson slug it out  with Ducati and Triumph in the premium motorcycle segment in the near future. The 250cc-500cc segment will be hotly contested when Triumph and Harley-Davidson come with their respective models to take on the Indian market in the near future. The 250cc-500cc segment in India is currently ruled by Royal Enfield and KTM. The Triumph Scrambler 1200 will take on the Ducati Scrambler 1100 when the former arrives in India next year.
