There is nothing like travelling in the open, under the sky and that is exactly what Gajanan Khaire, founder of Indo Cyclist Club along with Shankar Gadhve from Praj Industries did, on a cycle. In a nine-day journey, the duo cycled from Jammu to Pune. They covered more than 2000kms across five states and an elevation of 19712 meters. The heroic journey traversed through northern mountains, lonely highways and dense forests. The Indo Cyclist Club has organised many rides of these kind in the past. They do so to pass a social message on environment, bicycling and health. However, they did this particular ride to raise awareness on pedal tourism in the country.
The team kicked off their tour from Jammu – Tawi station on the 6th of December 2018. The cyclists reached Pune on 14th December. The journey was not easy as Gajanan and Shankar covered an average distance of 200kms every day in temperatures starting from 4 degrees Celsius in the morning along with cold winds and thick fog; not to mention the weight of the luggage they were carrying that was around 6kgs. Notwithstanding the weight or the effort needed, both of them cycled for 80kms to 100kms daily. They cycled from 9am to 11pm everyday with one hour’s rest during the day.
The young heroes got all the love, support and most importantly the hospitality from across all the states right from Jammu and Kashmir to Maharashtra that include Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. However, both the riders could not anticipate much to the feeling as they had to start off early the next day and keep riding towards Pune. Hence, this was one of the fastest cycle rides recorded so far.
