Greatest Indian Roads: Twisties of Ooty

Ooty or Udagamandalam is a well-known tourist destination in the Nilgiris. The food and the weather is brilliant. The roads that get you to the “Queen of the Hill Stations” are mind-blowing and the roads coming up from both sides of Coimbatore and Mudumalai have these fantastic switchbacks that make you ascend the Nilgiris rapidly.

The smooth tarmac-covered road is narrow in places, going through thick forests and is a pleasure to ride on. A bit steep in spots and with quite a bit of on coming traffic but “no one said it was easy to ride such great roads.”
Also, the road pictured is from Ooty to Gudalur another beautiful stretch is less steep and is much wider.

Low flying clouds, tea estates, and eucalyptus groves dot the 50km stretch of road that ends in Gudalur town. It’s amazing how great the road is with its sweeping turns. And with the fantastic weather, you’ll want to go up and down this stretch a couple of times. There is a network of great riding roads around Ooty and Coonoor that you could spend days exploring. However, carry some rain gear when you do because the weather changes in seconds.
